#IMBCNMTalks Gut-on-a-chip: mimicking and monitoring the human intestine
By Denise Marrero (GAB).
Organs-on-a-chip (OoC) are microfluidic cell culture systems that aim to model functional units of organs by recapitulating tissue-organ level physiology. This technology holds great potential in advancing the study of disease etiology, accelerating the discovery of new drugs, and paving the way towards precision medicine. In the case of the intestine, the incorporation of a 3D villi architecture and an oxygen gradient on OoC devices provide a more realistic model of the human intestinal anatomy and function. Moreover, monitoring the intestinal barrier function and tracking important biomarkers offers unprecedented advantages over conventional cultures and animal models.
